Hands On Studio provides a variety of multimedia group based art classes to many members of the Canberra community with a disability. All of the classes are taught using the person-centred approach, this approach provides all of our clients with the opportunity to work independently to meet their creative goals.


Hands On engages with several art and community institutions around Canberra to produce a range of contemporary works for events, exhibitions and to form creative partnerships.


As an art tutor at Hands On you will be fulfil and make a positive change for many.


The Role


As a casual Art Tutor, you will be required to work with minimal supervision under the guideline of the Art Program, within a person centred, Active Support, Recovery and SRV (Social Role Valorisation) approaches.


You will be expected to provide direct tuition to people with an intellectual, physical, psychosocial disability or multiple disabilities. Assistance will be available when required, however staff will be required to use their creative expertise, knowledge, skills and judgement in relation to their classes and the needs of the students.


The available position at Hands On Studio is casual and paid award wages.

Ideal Person


The ideal person we are looking for has:

  • Art Degree or relevant professional experience working in the arts
  • Relevant experience in working with people with a disability or in the community or education sectors.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the issues of imparting art skills and assisting students with a disability to achieve their artistic potential in the wider art community.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of working with people from a person centred approach.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and establish a rapport with people.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team.


To be considered for this role you will be also required to hold:

  • a current First Aid Certificate; and
  • a current Working With Vulnerable People Card


You will also be required to undergo a National Police Check.
