Cognitive Assessments

Do you or someone in your family require psychological testing? A cognitive assessment? Assessments to find out more about your IQ, academic abilities or to identify areas of giftedness or learning difficulties?

Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn currently offers psychological assessments for children, young people and adults in the Canberra community. All psychological testing is completed by an appropriately qualified and experience psychologist employed by Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn.

What is psychological testing?

Psychological testing is a form of assessment conducted by a psychologist to gather information about how people think, feel, behave and react. The focus of the psychological assessment will vary depending on its purpose and what needs to be measured or assessed. Such assessments generally include gathering information about the individual and may include a clinical interview, observation, consultation with other professionals and formal psychological testing, which involves the administration, scoring and interpretation of a relevant psychological test.

Psychologists take the information they have gathered to develop a bigger picture of an individual’s abilities and capabilities. This information is then used to provide recommendations around future treatment, support and services that appear suitable for the individual’s current or future needs. This information is formally written and presented in the form of a psychological report which is presented and explained to the individual and sent to any other relevant services that the individual would like involved.

What psychological tests are offered at Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn?

Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn currently offers the following psychological testing:

  • Cognitive testing (eg. IQ) – WAIS (for adults) or WISC (for children and young people).
  • Academic testing (eg. To identify current academic capabilities) – WIAT

What does it practically involve?

Psychological assessments will begin with an initial telephone call to the individual being referred (if over 18 years of age) or their primary carer (if under 18 years of age). This initial contact is to gather brief information about the suitability of the referral including what is the reason for the referral and what testing you are hoping to obtain. This is necessary to confirm that our service can offer you the appropriate testing that you need or are seeking.

If we are able to provide a psychological assessment that meets your needs, we will book the individual (and their primary carer/s if a child or young person) for an initial clinical interview. This will take between 60-90 minutes and is simply a way to gather further information about the individual’s developmental background, family circumstances, information around studies and work, interests as well as areas of concern or difficulties, specifically around the referral reason.

Following this initial interview, we will schedule a future appointment with the individual to conduct the psychological testing. The total time of the assessment/s may vary and any observations of the individual’s behaviour during testing may also be included in the written report.

Once the testing is complete, your allocated clinician will score and interpret the testing results of the testing and what this means regarding future recommendations.

Results of the psychological assessment are confidential and will only be released with written permission or if mandated by a court of law. Client data is stored according to Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn policy.

How much does it cost?

Pricing for the testing and report is dependent on the assessments that are required and can range from $880 up to $1060.
